Microsoft Releases (Public) Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2

Yesterday Microsoft announced the release for the 2nd beta of Internet Explorer 8, the upcoming standards-based Web browser. While Beta 1 was for developers, Beta 2 is targeted at anyone who browses or works on the web.

This week Microsoft announced that it will start offering an all-in-one security and productivity software subscription service for consumers. Called Microsoft Equipt, the service includes the anti-virus and anti-malware protection of Microsoft OneCare, and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote).
Bill Gates Retires from Microsoft

It has happened: this week Bill Gates has ended his full-time employment at Microsoft. The co-founder of Microsoft will not retire from the company completely: he will continue advising Microsoft in a part-time capacity, and will stay on the company's board as chairman.
Windows XP: No Reprieve - Phasing-out Starts June 30

Microsoft is to stop selling Windows XP on June 30, but many people are confused on what that actually means. What will happen after that date is that Microsoft will no longer be supplying the retail chain with (shrink-wrapped) copies of Windows XP. It will also stop supplying XP to the OEMs (Dell, HP and other manufacturers).

Microsoft Releases Windows XP Service Pack 3

Today Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system, in addition to a small number of new updates. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is now available for download and install via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center.
Steve Ballmer calls Vista 'a work in progress'

Last week I attended the Microsoft 2008 Global MVP conference. On the closing day I attended a keynote by Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer. He had a few interesting comments and things to share, one of which has been widely reported in the news by now, which was his comment that Windows Vista was 'a work in progress'. He got a good round of applause from the 1,700+ MVPs in the audience.
